About Leah

IMG_7934Hello, my name is Leah Topek-Walker and I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW-R) in the state of New York. For the past 11 years, I have been providing psychotherapy and behavioral interventions to individuals, couples, families and groups facing a variety of challenges. I graduated from Stony Brook University with my degree in social work in 2005; before that I studied liberal arts and creative writing at the New School for Social Research.

I have been privileged to work with people coping with the impact of trauma (sexual, physical and emotional), depression, anxiety, chronic illness, grief, domestic violence, addiction, issues around sexual orientation and gender issues. I use a multi-disciplinary approach that is unique to each individual’s needs and strengths. My primary treatment approach combines DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) with CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and the Strengths Perspective. I focus on helping people understand and recognize unhealthy thoughts, beliefs and attitudes while learning mindfulness and how to better manage emotions and reactions. By providing an environment of compassion, empathy and safety, clients are able to draw upon their own strengths to solve problems and move towards healing.

I have experience working with a wide range of adults, adolescents, couples and families. I am skilled in assisting those struggling with recent and/ or past traumas, depression, anxiety, post-partum depression, chronic illness, relationship challenges, loss and grief, substance use, and issues around sexuality.

I live on Long Island, and feel honored to be a member of this local community. I believe in healing through honesty with oneself, authenticity, and through building on our individual and unique strengths. I look forward to meeting you!!
